Ben is a specialist in Computational Archaeology with a focus on spatial data analysis, statistical modelling and GIS.

He studied Prehistoric Archaeology, Classical Archaeology and Computer Sciences at Freie Universität Berlin, where he received his M.A. degree in 2003. His thesis was co-tutored by the Department of Physical Geography and presents a computational model for assessing the effects of holocene soil erosion processes on archaeological sites.

His PhD thesis on "Computational Archaeology" was started in 2004 and has since then been funded with PhD grants by the Gerda Henkel Foundation and the EU Marie Curie Host Fellowship programme, allowing him to do research at University College London.

Ben's fieldwork, encompassing both rescue excavations and academic projects, has taken him to diverse prehistoric and classical sites in Central Europe, the Balkans and the Mediterranean (e.g. Ostia Antica, Schedia, Okoliste, Bruszczewo). He has extensive experience in many aspects of traditional archaeological fieldwork, geophysical prospection, photography, remote sensing and surveying.

Before starting at Oxford Archaeology, Ben worked for heritage management in Brandenburg/Germany and as a university lecturer in Computational Archaeology at Christian-Albrechts-Universität in Kiel/Germany (the first such position to be established in the country). He has also taught GIS classes in Italy, Switzerland and the UK.

A range of projects in heritage management, predictive modelling and past human behaviour modelling has resulted in links with universities, state institutions and companies in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Poland, Italy, Mexiko and the UK.

At OA Digital, Ben focuses his work on design and development of free GIS, documentation, training and education. His current projects include tools for archaeological predictive modelling, cultural landscape analysis, 3D subsurface modelling of archaeological strata and photogrammetric tools for 3D model reconstruction from overlapping images; all of which will eventually be available on our Software pages.

Ben is an advocate of good scientific practice and as such promotes the use of free and open source software, open standards and data sharing in archaeology. He is currently a member of the international GRASS GIS and the Stereo photo metrology development teams.
